Who’s Sara, Then?

Sara Hazlehurst is an English poet and teacher. She writes about the things most people only admit to their best friend.

Her debut poetry collection, Fight for the Light, is about life inside a coercive relationship. It’s honest about the bad bits, and it doesn’t pretend leaving was easy.

The rest of the time she writes about teaching, long walks, the natural world and everyday life, usually with a joke tucked in somewhere.

Poetry is how she makes sense of things. Usually by the third draft.

Fight for the Light

The debut poetry collection from Sara Hazlehurst. Out now.

This is a book about coercive control, written from the inside. The mind games. The walking on eggshells. The slow shrink of your confidence until you barely recognise yourself. And then, finally, the leaving.

It opens with The Octopus, all arms and no way out, and closes with The Last Battle, where things at last go quiet. In between there’s fear, courage, healing and a stubborn amount of hope.

If any of this sounds a bit too familiar, the National Domestic Abuse Helpline is free and open 24/7 on 0808 2000 247.

“Sometimes strength does not arrive loudly. It arrives as the decision to keep going for one more ordinary day.”
